Cub Scouting is for youth in kindergarten through fifth grade. Cub Scouts are divided up into Dens based on their grade level. They need not have earned the previous rank in order to earn the next. You can join Cub Scouts at any time! Each of the ranks in Cub Scouting has its own requirements that are age appropriate. As a Cub Scout advances through the ranks, the requirements get more challenging, to match the new skills and abilities they have learned.
There are six age groups in Cub Scouts:
Lion's Den: Kindergartners work toward the Lion rank. The Lion rank is earned by completing five adventures.
Tiger's Den: First graders work toward the Tiger rank. The Tiger rank is earned by completing seven adventures, one elective adventure of your den’s or family’s choosing, an earn the Cyber Chip award for your age.
Wolf's Den: Second graders work toward the Wolf rank. The Wolf rank is earned by completing seven adventures, one elective adventure of your den’s or family’s choosing, an earn the Cyber Chip award for your age.
Bear's Den: Third graders work toward the Bear rank. The Bear rank is earned by completing seven adventures, one elective adventure of your den’s or family’s choosing, an earn the Cyber Chip award for your age.
Webelo's Den: Fourth graders work toward the Webelos rank. The Webelos rank is earned by completing six adventures, one elective adventure of your den’s or family’s choosing, an earn the Cyber Chip award for your age. Scouts who are in Cub Scouts in fourth grade must complete the Webelos rank before working towards their Arrow of Light.
Arrow of Light Den: Fifth graders work toward the Arrow of Light rank. If a fourth-grade Cub Scout has completed the Webelos rank, they may begin to work on the Arrow of Light. The Arrow of Light rank is earned by completing five adventures, one elective adventure of your den’s or family’s choosing, an earn the Cyber Chip award for your age. They must also be a member of their den for at least three months. Arrow of Light Scouts will generally finish their requirements during the winter and will "crossover" into the Scout Troop before the school year ends!
Dens (each grade level) generally meet 1-2 Sundays a month. The entire Pack (all cub scouts together from all dens) usually meet one Sunday a month for larger activities (Pumpkin Carving, Raingutter Regatta, Pinewood Derby, Blue & Gold Banquet). There is usually one Sunday a month without den/pack meetings, and meetings near holidays are also scheduled off.
Den/Pack meetings take place from 6:00 to 7:30 PM on most Sunday evenings in the gymnasium of the Central College Presbyterian Church in Westerville, OH. The program year runs from the end of August through the end of May. There are occasional summer events.
Yes! Both boys and girls can join Cub Scouting. Boys and girls meet together in their dens.
Absolutely! Cub Scouts do not have to start out as a Tiger Cub (Kindergarten) in order to participate during their elementary school years. Cub Scouts can join at any time between Kindergarten and 5th grade.
Scouters can even join in the middle of a school year - it does not have to be during the traditional August recruitment period. Reach out to us for information on joining... at any time!
Camping is not required, though it is part of the fun of scouting! Each rank in Cub Scouting has Adventures that take Cub Scouts outdoors. From a one foot hike to a five mile hike, Cub Scouts learn about their natural surroundings. Our Pack usually offers two opportunities to family camp (fall and spring). A parent or guardian attends the campout with Cub Scouters - cub scouters do not camp on their own.
You do not have to invest in expensive equipment or supplies - our campouts are pretty simple. The pack also has extra tents and sleeping bags for families to borrow, if needed.
Nope! At a minimum, each Scout will need a uniform. Additional supplies and equipment may be needed for certain activities. Some of those supplies could be:
Supplies to decorate and shape on a Pinewood Derby car, with a kit that we provide the scouts
Camping gear, if you choose to participate in family campouts, though we have plenty of items like tents and sleeping bags you can borrow!
It does take the involvement of parents to lead a Cub Scout Pack - and not everyone has to wear a uniform to help! Pack 192 is fortunate to have so many dedicated leaders that step up each year to assist with programming. From being a Den Leader, to helping organize food for events, to organizing popcorn sales, to helping with weekly activities... there is something for everyone!
